What is Smart Manufacturing, anyway?

We haven’t exactly been manufacturing “dumb” in the past. “Smart” manufacturing simply means there is intelligence in more aspects of the manufacturing process than the human brain. It encompasses what you have heard about the “Internet of Things (IoT),” the “Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT),” and “Industry 4.0.” Smart manufacturing is the integration of intelligence in the actual machines, parts, materials, products, buildings and supply chain, and the application of that intelligence within a connected, open end-to-end process and infrastructure.

Hear what that means for Ansaldo Energia (AEN), a major manufacturer of turbines and thermal power plants. AEN is forging its path to Smart Manufacturing with PLM and MOM. These systems are a vital and strategic tool to manage information, processes and resources in order to support the entire plant lifecycle. AEN has embraced the vision of the smart factory, a journey which they are carrying out with the technical partnership of Siemens PLM Software.

If you are forging your own path to Smart Manufacturing, there are a few things you need to know. Hear the key strategic considerations from René Wolf.
