{"id":807,"date":"2018-11-01T15:01:52","date_gmt":"2018-11-01T22:01:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.plm.automation.siemens.com\/t5\/News-NX-Manufacturing\/Toolpath-simulation-software-is-the-key-to-safer-shorter-machine\/ba-p\/539550"},"modified":"2026-03-26T09:15:35","modified_gmt":"2026-03-26T13:15:35","slug":"toolpath-simulation-software-is-the-key-to-safer-shorter-machine-setups","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/nx-manufacturing\/toolpath-simulation-software-is-the-key-to-safer-shorter-machine-setups\/","title":{"rendered":"Toolpath simulation software is the key to safer, shorter machine setups"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><P>In the October 25, 2018, story in AdvancedManufacturing.org, titled, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/advancedmanufacturing.org\/simulation-software-seeing-believing\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">When it comes to simulation software, seeing is believing,<\/A>\u201d the authors gave software providers, including Siemens PLM, the opportunity to make the case for toolpath simulation software to prove out NC programs.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>The article states that by giving programmers the ability to simulate everything about the machining process\u2014the tool holders, spindles and turrets, the constantly changing work piece and the cutting tools moving around and through it\u2014software developers are making their virtual worlds into highly accurate predictors of everything that will occur once that green button does get pushed.They conclude that if your shop isn\u2019t using toolpath simulation software, then you\u2019re wasting valuable production time and putting expensive machine tools and safety record at risk.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Siemens\u2019 perspective figured prominently in the story about the importance of toolpath simulation sofware. You can read the quotes from Vynce Paradise, Siemens\u2019 Senior Director for Advanced Part Manufacturing, below.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><EM>The G-code driven simulation in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plm.automation.siemens.com\/global\/en\/products\/manufacturing-planning\/cam-software.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">NX CAM from Siemen<\/A>s uses the same NC programs that drive machine tools. The highly-accurate simulation helps companies eliminate failures, improve part quality, and increase machine uptime, according to Siemens.<\/EM><\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><EM>&nbsp;<\/EM><EM>Straddling the fence between standalone and integrated simulation is&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.plm.automation.siemens.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Siemens PLM Software Inc.<\/A>&nbsp;(Plano, TX). But as Siemens\u2019 Senior Director for Advanced Part Manufacturing Vynce Paradise explained, the company decided along the way to develop its own spin on simulation, one that is an integral part of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plm.automation.siemens.com\/global\/en\/products\/manufacturing-planning\/cam-software.html\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">NX CAM software<\/A>.<\/EM><\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><EM>\u201cThere are many good CAM systems out there and all offer some level of toolpath simulation, but it\u2019s important to recognize that there are multiple levels available,\u201d he said. \u201cThere\u2019s the basic simulation where you can see the stock model, the cutting tool, and maybe the tool holder, each moving relative to one another. We call that toolpath verification, and while useful, it\u2019s just a starting point.\u201d<\/EM><\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><EM>Take that one step further and you have true machine simulation, the \u201cdigital twin\u201d. \u201cThis is what we\u2019re focusing on today,\u201d Paradise pointed out. \u201cIt goes beyond the basics just described to include all aspects of the machining setup, each with its own kinetics and relative movement.
