For years Siemens has been talking about the industry game-changer, Additive Manufacturing (AM). We’ve described how it’s changing the way products are made, enabling us to reimagine products and reigniting the imagination. It’s also rapidly evolving from the prototype environment onto the production floor with the help of revolutionary new technologies, machines and processes.
Last fall we introduced Additive Manufacturing with NX, a single, integrated system that meets the unique challenges of designing, optimizing and building metal and plastic components using the latest AM methods. By using NX you are able to combine standard CAD modeling functions with special structural and topology optimization capabilities to develop groundbreaking designs for AM processes and have the power to drive the latest AM equipment, including powder bed, jet fusion and FDM 3D printing machines as well as hybrid additive machine tools. To help deliver on the Additive Manufacturing with NX system’s promise we announced key partnerships with industry leaders HP, Stratasys, TRUMPF, EOS, and most recently with Materialise.
Today at Hannover Messe 2017 we made another major announcement as part of our vision to deliver the industry’s most complete set of tools to support the global AM industry. We shared our plan to create a new digital part manufacturing platform designed to bring on-demand product design and 3D printing production to the global AM industry.
Connecting additive manufacturing experts, technology, and equipment
Siemens’ goal is to provide a digital part manufacturing platform connecting all members of the global manufacturing community to maximize resource utilization, grow expertise and expand business opportunity. Connecting product designers, for example, to factories with excess additive manufacturing capacity, can help some members reduce inventory and time-to-market while others build their client base and reputation. In addition, the collaborative capabilities can help facilitate the co-innovation process and accelerate the adoption of 3D printing as a mainstream production method for industrial parts.
We are creating the platform because part buyers need to connect to qualified manufacturers offering the latest digital and industrial 3D printing technologies and expertise. At the same time, highly skilled manufacturers need to create a pipeline of job orders for next generation designs that lend themselves to industrial additive manufacturing. Siemens is uniquely positioned to help connect the experts, technology, and equipment to efficiently address these mutual business opportunities.
The digital ecosystem will include highly-vetted members from a variety of areas including job shops, part buyers, engineers, material suppliers, machine OEMS, micro-factories, software providers and much more. Members will be able to instantly connect with other members to initiate on-demand product design and manufacturing. As a result, part buyers could quickly find more qualified manufacturers, enhance job scheduling and reduce the time needed to produce parts. At the same time, manufacturing service providers can optimize machine utilization and expand their businesses.
The Siemens Part Manufacturing Platform will host and provide a broad range of engineering and business engineering tools that will be made available to members to ensure smooth collaboration, quotation, job process monitoring, Design Optimization for AM and more.
“In order to increase the usage of additive manufacturing for industrial production, more companies need access to the technologies, expertise and processes which will create more designs that lend themselves to additive manufacturing,” said Phil Hatherley, General Manager of Materials Solutions, a leading Siemens Services Provider for Additive Manufacturing. “By developing an online collaborative platform, Siemens is connecting the additive manufacturing community and creating an ecosystem where co-innovation will drive additive manufacturing forward.”
