You might not think \u201cdesign\u201d when you hear about it, but you should. True, it\u2019s one of the greatest sporting challenges in the world. To win requires a sailing team in peak physical shape that works in sync. But the America\u2019s Cup is just as much a challenge of design as it is one of sport. You need an optimal design that\u2019s tested and proven to work before you ever hit the water. A better design equals better performance, and that can mean the difference between taking home the cup\u2026 or returning empty handed.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>That\u2019s why <a title=\"Ben Ainslie Racing Case Study\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.plm.automation.siemens.com\/t5\/NX-Design-Blog\/America-s-Cup-The-Race-to-a-Winning-Design\/ba-p\/295664\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ben Ainslie Racing (BAR) is using NX<\/A>&nbsp;to design their boat for the 2017 America\u2019s Cup challenge. The team aims to bring the cup home to Britain for the first time since the race\u2019s inception in 1851, and NX helps them tackle their biggest design challenges.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>The boat will fly in the air more than sail through the water due to hydrofoils\u2014carbon composite blades similar to paddle boards\u2014that lift the hull above the water\u2019s surface. Thus, understanding computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is crucial for BAR\u2019s designers. Scripts in NX let them produce hundreds of CFD geometries \u201cat the push of a button,\u201d says technical director Andy Claughton.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>&nbsp;<IMG src=\"https:\/\/blogs.plm.automation.siemens.com\/t5\/image\/serverpage\/image-id\/12454i7DC531CD62DC65EB\/image-size\/medium?v=mpbl-1&amp;px=-1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Americas Cup Design Challenge BAR.jpg\" title=\"Americas Cup Design Challenge BAR.jpg\" \/><\/P><br \/>\n<P>Time is of the essence with a race of this kind. There are no second chances.
