It\u2019s more affordable and accessible than ever, and as more people take advantage of those benefits, we\u2019re starting to see some interesting and unique uses for the technology. What <EM>can\u2019t <\/EM>you print these days? From <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/innovations\/wp\/2015\/01\/28\/5-amazing-ways-3d-printed-food-will-change-the-way-we-eat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">3D printed food<\/A> to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/technology-32795169\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">skin<\/A> to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thingiverse.com\/thing:37147\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">camera lenses<\/A>, the possibilities are limited only by our imaginations.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>GE pushed that limit even further last week with a 3D printed miniature jet engine that not only runs, but roars at 33,000 RPM (rotations per minute).<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><IMG src=\"https:\/\/blogs.plm.automation.siemens.com\/t5\/image\/serverpage\/image-id\/13434iE950EA599C57799B\/image-size\/medium?v=mpbl-1&amp;px=-1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"3D printed engine GE.jpg\" title=\"3D printed engine GE.jpg\" width=\"189\" height=\"106\" align=\"left\" \/><\/P><br \/>\n<P>How do you design a working jet engine the size of a backpack?<SPAN style=\"line-height: 18px;\">&nbsp;Due to the complexity and cost of replicating a full scale jet engine, the GE team began with something a little simpler: The design for a remote-controlled model plane engine. They then modified the design to fit their 3D printing machines.<\/SPAN><\/P><br \/>\n<P><SPAN style=\"line-height: 18px;\">&nbsp;<\/SPAN><\/P><br \/>\n<P><SPAN style=\"line-height: 18px;\">&nbsp;<\/SPAN><\/P><br \/>\n<P>The GE team built the engine from additive manufacturing (3D printed) parts. They used direct metal laser melting (DMLM), a process that melts metal powder layer upon layer, to create the parts.<SPAN style=\"line-height: 18px;\">They then assembled the parts and fired it up inside the same test cell they use for full-scale engines.<\/SPAN><\/P><br \/>\n<P><SPAN style=\"line-height: 18px;\">&nbsp;<\/SPAN><\/P><br \/>\n<P><SPAN style=\"line-height: 18px;\"><IMG src=\"https:\/\/blogs.plm.automation.siemens.com\/t5\/image\/serverpage\/image-id\/13435iE6CE18153A0B526B\/image-size\/medium?v=mpbl-1&amp;px=-1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"3D printing jet engine parts.gif\" title=\"3D printing jet engine parts.gif\" \/><\/SPAN><\/P><br \/>\n<P><SPAN style=\"line-height: 18px;\">&nbsp;<\/SPAN><\/P><br \/>\n<P>See the engine in action, and pay close attention at 26 seconds.
