{"id":2128,"date":"2014-08-07T01:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-08-07T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.plm.automation.siemens.com\/t5\/NX-Design-Blog\/Mars-2020-Rover-Builds-Off-of-Curiosity-Extends-Research\/ba-p\/264705"},"modified":"2026-03-26T04:25:10","modified_gmt":"2026-03-26T08:25:10","slug":"mars-2020-rover-builds-off-of-curiosity-extends-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/nx-design\/mars-2020-rover-builds-off-of-curiosity-extends-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Mars 2020 Rover Builds Off of Curiosity, Extends Research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><P>This week marks two years since NASA\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Jet Propulsion Laboratory<\/A> landed the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.plm.automation.siemens.com\/en_us\/campaigns\/mars-curiosity-rover\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Mars rover Curiosity<\/A> on the Red Planet&#8217;s surface.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>With only one chance to get it right, people across the globe watched helplessly on August 5, 2012 as a module gently lowered the car-sized rover.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Curiosity landed safely though thanks to scientists and engineers who, during the rover&#8217;s development process, ran countless simulations in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.plm.automation.siemens.com\/en_us\/products\/nx\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">NX<\/A>.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><IMG src=\"https:\/\/blogs.plm.automation.siemens.com\/t5\/image\/serverpage\/image-id\/8507iA2C51E0F116AF107\/image-size\/medium?v=mpbl-1&amp;px=-1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Mars 2020 Rover based on Curiosity designed with NX CAD.png\" title=\"Mars 2020 Rover based on Curiosity designed with NX CAD.png\" align=\"right\" \/>Now the Curiosity&#8217;s design forms the basis for the next <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">NASA<\/A> Mars rover mission.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>This mission is set to commence in 2020, and this time, the rover will carry seven instruments totaling $130 million that will help determine if life on Mars\u2014whether Martian or human\u2014is possible.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>These tools were selected from a record number of proposals that point to growing interest in Mars exploration and research.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Software such as NX plays a vital role in these missions. Engineers can test designs for validity in simulated environments with conditions physically impossible to recreate on Earth.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>This is extremely important when you design a vehicle for interplanetary travel that will face such extremes as atmospheric and gravitational changes.
