The first technology of its kind, Convergent Modeling allows designers to combine facets, surfaces, and solids in one model without converting data.Not only that, but you can import scanned 3D data as facets. Convergent Modeling is only available in <a title=\"NX 11 News on the Community\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.plm.automation.siemens.com\/t5\/forums\/searchpage\/tab\/message?filter=location,includeBlogs,includeTkbs&amp;q=nx%2011&amp;include_tkbs=true&amp;location=category:NXforDesign&amp;include_blogs=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NX 11<\/A>.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>This technology has the potential to drastically change people\u2019s lives for the better, and we\u2019re not just talking about the engineers and designers who use the software. (Though, let\u2019s be honest, who wouldn\u2019t love to eliminate an entire step from <a title=\"New Reverse Engineering  Process with Convergent Modeling\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.plm.automation.siemens.com\/t5\/Digital-Transformations\/Remove-common-reverse-engineering-obstacles-with-Convergent\/ba-p\/362648\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the reverse engineering process<\/A>?) Consider for a moment all of those industries that rely on reverse engineering to develop their products: medical, consumer &amp; retail, industrial\u2026 Wherever there are products that are handheld, worn, or otherwise \u201cfit\u201d to a person or object, you will find reverse engineering is used.&nbsp;Take the knee cutting block shown above, for example. Let\u2019s look at a few specific examples.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-left\" style=\"width: 239px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/09\/medical-1.jpg\" width=\"239\" height=\"159\" alt=\"medical.jpg\" title=\"medical.jpg\" \/><\/span>If you haven\u2019t stopped to take note of what\u2019s going on in the medical industry lately, chances are you\u2019ve missed some things. Technology such as 3D scanning and printing are used more frequently now than they were a year ago. A nine-month-old baby\u2019s life was saved earlier this year when a doctor used a <a title=\"3D Printed Heart Saves Baby&#039;s Life\" href=\"https:\/\/3dprint.com\/124954\/3d-printed-heart-saves-baby\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">3D printed model of a human heart<\/A> to assist in pre-planning the complex surgery, a practice that is becoming more commonplace. <a title=\"Celprogen\" href=\"http:\/\/www.celprogen.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Celprogen<\/A>, a biotechnology company focused on regenerative medicine, announced yesterday that they created <a title=\"3D Printed Heart Created from Cardiac Stem Cells\" href=\"https:\/\/3dprint.com\/149998\/celprogen-3d-printed-heart\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">3D printed hearts<\/A> using PLA scaffolds filled with adult human cardiac stem cells. Think of how this technology, once mature, could revolutionize the organ donation process. In the United States alone, more than 120,000 people are waiting for an <a href=\"https:\/\/optn.transplant.hrsa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">organ transplant<\/A>.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-right\" style=\"width: 400px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/09\/surgeon-1.jpg\" alt=\"surgeon.jpg\" title=\"surgeon.jpg\" \/><\/span>3D scanning, meanwhile, is being used by doctors in Scotland to create near-identical external ear implants for children with microtia. The condition causes the external ear to be misshapen, and while non-life-threatening, can have psychological effects on the children. Doctors have recently moved from a traditional 2D drawing process\u2014in which they would trace the ear on a piece of paper to start\u2014to one that involves <a title=\"3D Scanning Improves Ear Implant Production and Outcomes\" href=\"http:\/\/www.engineering.com\/3DPrinting\/3DPrintingArticles\/ArticleID\/12892\/3D-Scanning-Improves-Ear-Implant-Production-and-Outcomes.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">3D scanning and printing,<\/A> which allows for more exact ear implants that can be 3D printed right in their office. Doctors are able to improve the children&#8217;s quality of life by providing better implants much faster, in some cases almost immediately, compared with the technology of the past.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>3D scanned data has presented some challenges when brought into a <a title=\"NX for Design \" href=\"https:\/\/www.plm.automation.siemens.com\/en_us\/products\/nx\/for-design\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">CAD system<\/A> to work with, though. Before now, 3D scanned data had to undergo a lengthy conversion process in order to be usable. Designers would have to build surfaces around the scanned data before continuing the design process.
