Martin Wind Tunnel.<BR \/><BR \/>Jewel is director of UMD&#8217;s wind tunnel. He shares in our three-part video interview below why he went into aeronautical engineering and academia.<BR \/><BR \/><IMG class=\"alignleft\" alt=\"Jewel Barlow on Siemens PLM Software at UMD\" src=\"http:\/\/windvane.umd.edu\/images\/barlow-lg.png\" width=\"155\" height=\"194\" \/><BR \/><BR \/>He also notes why this grant is important to UMD:<BR \/><\/P><BLOCKQUOTE>\u201cTo do aerodynamic testing\u2026 we need that three-dimensional information as efficiently as possible\u2026 Typical wind test planning cycle may be six months to a year. That\u2019s too long. It needs to be days instead of months. That will only happen with these software tools\u2026The software that enables us\u2026 will have to become second nature to our best engineers, our best designers.\u201d<\/BLOCKQUOTE><BR \/><STRONG>Part 1:<\/STRONG><BR \/><BR \/>http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=LV0LTEdDJlg<BR \/><BR \/><STRONG>Part 2:<\/STRONG><BR \/><BR \/>http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nfDs-9jtpso<BR \/><BR \/><STRONG>Part 3:<\/STRONG><BR \/><BR \/>http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=17n7epF6i2U<BR \/><BR \/>In addition to Jewel\u2019s comments, I also wanted to share these outtakes in the <A href=\"http:\/\/www.diamondbackonline.com\/news\/campus\/article_5c0508cc-20e7-11e3-a516-0019bb30f31a.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">recent issue of the UMD\u2019s independent student newspaper, The Diamondback<\/A>:<BR \/><BLOCKQUOTE>\u201cNow, the university can use it in its own projects, helping <STRONG>merge the gap between theory and application to spur economic growth<\/STRONG> in manufacturing and bring the university up to par with the world\u2019s top innovators, (University President Wallace) Loh said.\u201d<BR \/><BR \/>\u201cThe software will become a <STRONG>central resource<\/STRONG> through all aspects of the design process, from concept to implementation, making it easier and faster to create projects,\u201d students and faculty said.<BR \/><BR \/>\u201cThe new software is <STRONG>more team-oriented<\/STRONG>, helping students working on group projects,\u201d she said (Liz Sauerbrunn, mechanical engineering graduate student).<BR \/><BR \/>\u201cThe biggest difference this software is going to bring is <STRONG>innovation<\/STRONG> of the various domains,\u201d said Moschler, Institute of Systems Research robotics lab manager. \u201cThe software we have is unattached together.
