I love seeing the students\u2019 creativity, passion and professionalism. It reminds me that the strongest real-world competitions go beyond just an engineering idea or product.<BR \/><BR \/>The students learn most in programs that also address the business and communications side of ensuring there is a market for the product and how to get that product to market. Much of ensuring there is a market requires outreach to younger students\/future consumers.<BR \/><BR \/>I\u2019m reminded of a student team from Mexico I met at a robotics competition recently.&nbsp;Meet Team Nautilus 4010 \u2013 particularly three of their 24 members: Mariana Lima, Silvia T\u00e9liz and Fernanda Obscura. The team is from <A href=\"http:\/\/www.itesm.mx\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Tecnol\u00f3gico de Monterrey<\/A>. In the video interviews below they share how they inspire future engineers and why they participate in robotics competitions.<BR \/><BR \/><IFRAME width=\"425\" height=\"355\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/Cptn0jVd8QI\"><\/IFRAME><BR \/><BR \/>(<EM>Thanks to my son Kyle for recording this one. I was recording it on a different camera but my version turned out fuzzy so we\u2019ll go with my 10-year-old\u2019s backup version<\/EM> ;-)).<BR \/><BR \/>They made it to FIRST Robotics World Competition on an <STRONG>Engineering Inspiration<\/STRONG> Award.<BR \/><BR \/>The award \u201ccelebrates outstanding success in advancing respect and appreciation for engineering within a team\u2019s school and community.\u201d The team won it at a regional competition just two weeks before the world event. They inspire through robotic workshops, promotional events and developing\/mentoring a younger robotics team. They even organized 200 people for a &#8220;Tec Mob&#8221; flash mob. Judges were impressed with their mentoring program to students with low resources.Fernanda explains more about their outreach<BR \/><BR \/><IFRAME width=\"425\" height=\"355\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/ot6kBrhkyIY\"><\/IFRAME><BR \/><BR \/><A href=\"http:\/\/community.plm.automation.siemens.com\/legacyfs\/online\/wordpress\/images\/2014\/06\/nautilus-team-picture.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"> <IMG src=\"https:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2923\/14053642185_39bebaa1b2.jpg\" alt=\"Solid Edge on the Nautilus 4010 robot\" width=\"500\" height=\"332\" \/><\/A><BR \/><BR \/>Their team is organized into engineering, business and communication. It is clear they have strengths in all. They designed and built their robot with Solid Edge that they taught themselves. They cut parts right on campus with a CNC machine.&nbsp;Marianna noted:<BR \/><\/P><BLOCKQUOTE>\u201cThe main plus that Solid Edge has is that it is compatible with CNC. Solid Edge makes everything easy. We can&#8217;t afford to buy parts so we make all the robot ourselves with a CNC machine on campus.&#8221;<\/BLOCKQUOTE><BR \/>Mariana volunteered for the team after she saw posters at school. She said not many schools have these kinds of programs. For her it is less about the competition and more overcoming challenges in preparing the robot.<BR \/><BLOCKQUOTE>&#8220;It helps you grow as you learn about everything from engineering to business. Organization is key to success. All have to work together. All have responsibility. That is really important.&#8221;<\/BLOCKQUOTE><BR \/><IMG class=\"alignleft wp-image-17712 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/community.plm.automation.siemens.com\/legacyfs\/online\/wordpress\/images\/2014\/06\/nautilus-team-picture-300x201.jpg\" alt=\"engineering software for students\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" \/>Lamberton Alvarez, one of the team mentors, explained the team found inspiration in the design of their campus, which is in the shape of a Nautilus seashell.
