One of the slides I presented (above) was a typical work day.&nbsp; My day is not that scheduled but this could easily be&nbsp; a real day for me. You can see how social media (red) is woven through my day.<BR \/><BR \/>I also gave a list of some practical things that&nbsp;have&nbsp;helped me be more efficient (updated a bit to keep up with the times).<BR \/><BR \/><!--more--><BR \/><UL><BR \/>\t<LI>Don\u2019t make social media a task.&nbsp; Make it something you do between tasks and avoid creating new interruptions.<\/LI><BR \/>\t<LI>Use social media apps (e.g. <A title=\"5 Twitter Management Tools You Can\u2019t Live Without\" href=\"http:\/\/www.toprankblog.com\/2010\/02\/twitter-management-tools\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Tweetdeck or similar for Twitter<\/A>, <A title=\"Nielsen: Facebook Dominates Smartphones App Market\" href=\"http:\/\/www.insidefacebook.com\/2010\/06\/02\/nielsen-facebook-dominates-smartphones-app-market\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Facebook app<\/A> for your smart phone) for quick direct access.<\/LI><BR \/>\t<LI>Create single click links to your social media sites.&nbsp; Clicking and checking can be done in less than 30 seconds.<IMG class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/community.plm.automation.siemens.com\/legacyfs\/online\/wordpress\/images\/2010\/08\/ScreenHunter_09-Aug.-02-16.32.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"477\" height=\"28\" \/><\/LI><BR \/>\t<LI><STRONG>For CAD productivity, the biggest bang for the buck you can get is by <\/STRONG><A title=\"Microsoft Research Two Screens Are Better Than One\" href=\"http:\/\/research.microsoft.com\/en-us\/news\/features\/vibe.aspx\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><STRONG>adding a second monitor<\/STRONG><\/A><STRONG> <\/STRONG>and I\u2019m willing to bet it is the same for social media. Park your social media apps next to outlook and leave behind inefficient iconifingand window cycling.<\/LI><BR \/>\t<LI>Make use of unused snippets of time like while waiting in line, at the doctors office,&nbsp;<A title=\"Unless your school has a band link the Marching 110 of OU.\" href=\"http:\/\/marching110.squarespace.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">half time at the football game<\/A>, while doing an FEA solve, etc.<\/LI><BR \/>\t<LI>Too busy for Twitter?&nbsp; Check out apps like <A title=\"TwinBox for Outlook\" href=\"http:\/\/www.techhit.com\/TwInbox\/twitter_plugin_outlook.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Twinbox <\/A>that let you use use twitter from Outlook. At the minimum have your DM\u2019s and mentions show up in Outlook. (thanks to<A title=\"A useful tweet\" href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/jchawner\/statuses\/20713030295\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"> John Chowner<\/A> for this tip)<\/LI><BR \/>\t<LI>It\u2019s a mole hill, not a mountain. Don\u2019t think you need to do it all and follow it all.&nbsp; Just because you heard a good idea by the coffee pot doesn\u2019t mean you should put your desk there (however, do try to check in once a day)<\/LI><BR \/>\t<LI>\u2022IMHO The first 30 minutes you spend in social media is valuable.&nbsp; The second 30 minutes is less valuable, the third is even less valuable. <STRONG>Know when your time is better spent elsewhere.<\/STRONG><\/LI><BR \/>\t<LI>Leverage what you know and what you are interested in. Facebook is easier if your kids<A title=\"Time Magazine - Oh Crap! My Parents Joined Facebook\" href=\"http:\/\/www.time.com\/time\/business\/article\/0,8599,1909187,00.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"> (or parents!)<\/A> are already there.<\/LI><BR \/>\t<LI>Don\u2019t talk about what you don\u2019t know.&nbsp; Don\u2019t pick fights.&nbsp; Don\u2019t be defensive.<\/LI><BR \/>\t<LI>Be helpful.<\/LI><BR \/><\/UL><BR \/>Finally, I\u2019ll wrap up with some final thought that came from the latest <A title=\"Sorry, I don't pick the titles\" href=\"http:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/mzkagan\/what-the-fk-is-social-media-now-4747637\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">\u201cWhat the f**k is social media\u201d<\/A> slide share presentation.<BR \/><OL><BR \/>\t<LI>Listen<\/LI><BR \/>\t<LI>Engage<\/LI><BR \/>\t<LI>Be Real<\/LI><BR \/>\t<LI>Be Respectful<\/LI><BR \/>\t<LI>Have Fun<\/LI><BR \/><\/OL><BR \/>In my opinion, too many people in business forget some of these(and yes, having fun is important).<\/P><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here is Part 1 and Part 2 if you are joining late.
