{"id":356,"date":"2012-08-06T09:20:04","date_gmt":"2012-08-06T16:20:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.plm.automation.siemens.com\/t5\/Siemens-PLM-Corporate-Blog\/PLM-on-Mars-How-NASA-JPL-Used-Siemens-Technology-to-Land\/ba-p\/334975"},"modified":"2026-03-26T11:00:04","modified_gmt":"2026-03-26T15:00:04","slug":"plm-on-mars-how-nasa-jpl-used-siemens-technology-to-land-curiosity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/news\/plm-on-mars-how-nasa-jpl-used-siemens-technology-to-land-curiosity\/","title":{"rendered":"PLM on Mars: How NASA JPL Used Siemens Technology to Land Curiosity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><P><A rel=\"attachment wp-att-11479 nofollow noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.industrysoftware.automation.siemens.com\/?attachment_id=11479\"><IMG class=\"size-full wp-image-11479 alignleft\" style=\"margin: 10px\" src=\"http:\/\/community.plm.automation.siemens.com\/legacyfs\/online\/wordpress\/images\/2012\/07\/JPL_Small_tcm1023-186713.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"276\" height=\"268\" \/><\/A>On behalf of all the employees of Siemens PLM Software, we would like to congratulate our partner, <a title=\"NASA JPL\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">NASA\u2019s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL)<\/A> for successfully landing the \u201cCuriosity\u201d Rover on Mars.<BR \/><BR \/>It\u2019s well documented that the difficulty in landing a 2000 pound vehicle on a planet that is 248 million km (154 million miles) away, travelling at speeds up to 300 times that of a Formula One racecar and experiencing a temperature range of more than 3000\u00b0 F (-463 to +2637) is, for lack of a better word, ENORMOUS. Think of it this way, we describe cars as going from 0-60 in 2.1 seconds. NASA did just the opposite. They took something the size of a Mini Cooper from 13,000 mph to a complete stop during a timeframe they call the <a title=\"Seven Minutes of Terror\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Ki_Af_o9Q9s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">\u201cSeven Minutes of Terror\u201d<\/A>.<BR \/><BR \/>But exactly how did the very smart people at NASA develop a machine that could withstand such engineering challenges as the shock and vibration at take off in Cape Canaval to the constant heating of the sun and frigid cold of deep space to ensuring the spacecraft maintains its trajectory, and is positioned optimally for solar energy capture, and signal dispatch back to Earth? (yes, the answer is\u2026with the help of Siemens PLM software technology)<BR \/><BR \/>Spacecraft design is unique. According to Bill Allen, mechanical design engineer at JPL:<BR \/><\/P><BLOCKQUOTE>\u201cWe don\u2019t get a chance to retry or rebuild or service or redesign. We have one shot\u2014and it\u2019s usually doing something we\u2019ve never done before. We\u2019re trying to use existing tools and processes to get us through a unique design.\u201d<\/BLOCKQUOTE><BR \/>You might recognize Bill from the interviews that Chris Kelley and Dora Smith did with him on this blog or have seen him at one of our <a title=\"PLM World\" href=\"http:\/\/www.plmworld.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">PLM Connections events<\/A> over the years. He\u2019s provided lots of information about how JPL uses our software; thanks Bill!<BR \/><BR \/>The Curiosity design required JPL to use intelligently integrated information to solve the very complex engineering challenges faced by all the variables I mentioned above. Almost a decade ago, JPL began using something we called \u201cBeta NX 1\u201d. JPL used to have a very diverse set of modeling and data management tools \u2014 mainly people\u2019s file cabinets \u2013 and they needed a more modern and \u201cfuture-proof\u201d environment. Both <a title=\"NX\" href=\"http:\/\/www.plm.automation.siemens.com\/en_us\/products\/nx\/index.shtml?stc=wwiia420005\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">NX<\/A> and <A href=\"http:\/\/www.plm.automation.siemens.com\/en_us\/products\/teamcenter\/index.shtml?stc=wwiia420005\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Teamcenter<\/A> provided JPL with a seamless architecture and more software-to-software interfaces, providing them with better control of the delivery and receipt of data. How much data? Approximately 1 terabyte. By using integrated <a title=\"NX\" href=\"http:\/\/www.plm.automation.siemens.com\/en_us\/products\/nx\/index.shtml?stc=wwiia420005\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">CAD\/CAM\/CAE technology<\/A>, JPL was able to digitally design, simulate and assemble the Rover before any physical prototypes were built.<BR \/><BR \/>NX helped ensure all components of the Rover would fit together, operate properly and withstand whatever environment the mission would require. Our technology was even used to predict and control thetemperature variation of sophisticated instruments to less than 1 degree Celsius. The result was faster iterations in design and analysis, less manual rework, increased efficiency and more confidence in the design implementation and mission simulations.<BR \/><BR \/>For future missions, JPL engineers will be able to re-use designs or design features, such as a thruster or particular heat rejection system, because the entire Rover model is now in a managed database. According to JPL, this will result in greatly improved efficiency, configuration management and knowledge retention.<BR \/><BR \/><STRONG>Why CAE was such an important part of the development process<\/STRONG><BR \/><BR \/>As I mentioned above, the Rover experiences a vast range of temperatures. Nothing like the temperature we experience on Earth. Even the freezing polar cap of Antarctica or the desert heat of Egypt couldn\u2019t match what the Rover faced in space.<BR \/><BR \/>In the <A href=\"http:\/\/www.plm.automation.siemens.com\/en_us\/campaigns\/mars-curiosity-rover\/#lightview%26uri=tcm:1023-173767%26title=Desktop%20Engineering%20-%20Engineering%20the%20Mars%20Rover%20-%20Desktop%20Engineering%20Feb%202012%26docType=.pdf&amp;stc=wwiia420005\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">February 2012 cover Story of <EM>Desktop Engineering<\/EM><\/A>, JPL\u2019s Art Avila, a 27-year veteran of JPL &amp; manager of the Mars Space Laboratory\u2019s (MSL) Thermal and Cryogenic Engineering Section had this to say<BR \/><BLOCKQUOTE>\u201cWhen you\u2019re dealing with Earth-based development, you just don\u2019t have the range of dynamic and thermal loads that something that\u2019s expected to leave our planet and land on another planet is going to experience. We have to balance risk, cost, volume [and mass] in a different trade space than one would with a car or a plane.\u201d<\/BLOCKQUOTE><BR \/>NX successfully helped JPL create the geometry and generate the thermal model, while Teamcenter efficiently captures and maintains the design data. That allows much quicker integration of new design features into their CAE environment to update their models and perform analyses quickly.<BR \/><BR \/>You can find more information about JPL\u2019s use of <A href=\"http:\/\/www.plm.automation.siemens.com\/en_us\/about_us\/success\/case_study.cfm?Component=186732&amp;ComponentTemplate=1481&amp;stc=wwiia420005\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">NX CAE and the thermal challenges<\/A> they faced in our case study.<BR \/><BR \/><STRONG>It takes great people to do great things<\/STRONG><BR \/><BR \/>Here at Siemens PLM, we are lucky enough to have among us, one of the engineers who helped design Curiosity. I\u2019d like you to meet Daren Rhoades, new product development manager for Siemens PLM and former JPL employee. Daren was an engineer in the Space Craft Structure Group at JPL and a member of the Rover Design team. He now takes his experience at NASA and helps Siemens PLM explore new technologies and incorporate new ideas in our products.<BR \/><BR \/><DIV style=\"background-color: #F9F9F9;border: 1px solid #CCCCCC;padding: 3px;font: 11px\/1.4em Arial, sans-serif;margin: 0.5em 0pt 0.5em 0.8em;width:300px;\"><A rel=\"attachment wp-att-11697 nofollow noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/blog.industrysoftware.automation.siemens.com\/blog\/2012\/08\/06\/nasa-jpl-mars-curiosity-rover\/marscuriosity_nx_cad_rendering\/\"><IMG class=\"size-medium wp-image-11697  \" src=\"http:\/\/community.plm.automation.siemens.com\/legacyfs\/online\/wordpress\/images\/2012\/08\/MarsCuriosity_NX_CAD_Rendering-300x189.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"189\" \/><\/A><DIV style=\"text-align:center;\">NX Rendering of the Mars Curiosity Rover &#8212; Image courtesy of NASA\/JPL-Caltech<\/DIV> <\/DIV><BR \/><BR \/>While at JPL, Daren used NX for design, motion simulation and stress analysis to speed decision making. In the NX rendering of the rover to the left, different systems are color coded. Daren\u2019s specific job was the gray box in the middle that houses everything from scientific instruments, wiring, computers and telecommunications equipment. He said that it was the first time JPL included harness design in the initial configuration of the rover and it wouldn\u2019t have worked otherwise because it is easy to forget how much space wiring consumes. And on this mission, JPL was able to take advantage of the fact that Mars\u2019 atmosphere is mainly comprised of carbon dioxide, something they learned on previous missions, to use as an insulator for electronics inside the rover.<BR \/><BR \/>When I asked Daren about his experience using NX and Teamcenter, he had this to say:<BR \/><BLOCKQUOTE>\u201cHaving the current design visible to the entire team is imperative when making decisions. We conducted regular design reviews where the NX model was up on the big screen and we would have everyone from the stress analysis group to the wire harness group make changes right there in the design room. Working on challenges and given the opportunity to push the limits of what\u2019s possible is when advances in technology and space exploration happen.\u201d<\/BLOCKQUOTE><BR \/>I asked how the Mars Curiosity got its name and learned that student Clara Ma from Kenexa, Kansas USA named the rover in a contest. She wrote:<BR \/><BLOCKQUOTE>&#8220;Curiosity is an everlasting flame that burns in everyone&#8217;s mind. It makes me get out of bed in the morning and wonder what surprises life will throw at me that day&#8230; Curiosity is the passion that drives us through our everyday lives. We have become explorers and scientists with our need to ask questions and to wonder&#8230; We will never know everything there is to know, but with our burning curiosity, we have learned so much.&#8221;<\/BLOCKQUOTE><BR \/>We have learned a great deal from NASA about our own tools and we look forward to human-kind learning more about Mars in the coming months.
