{"id":304,"date":"2014-04-02T05:00:43","date_gmt":"2014-04-02T12:00:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.plm.automation.siemens.com\/t5\/Siemens-PLM-Corporate-Blog\/Redefining-engines-with-manufacturing-simulation\/ba-p\/335222"},"modified":"2026-03-26T11:30:41","modified_gmt":"2026-03-26T15:30:41","slug":"redefining-engines-with-manufacturing-simulation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/news\/redefining-engines-with-manufacturing-simulation\/","title":{"rendered":"Redefining engines with manufacturing simulation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><P><A href=\"http:\/\/community.plm.automation.siemens.com\/legacyfs\/online\/wordpress\/images\/2014\/03\/Tecnomatix-for-Machinery-Manufacturing-Perkins-Engines.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><IMG class=\"wp-image-17302 alignleft\" alt=\"Tecnomatix for Machinery Manufacturing - Perkins Engines\" src=\"http:\/\/community.plm.automation.siemens.com\/legacyfs\/online\/wordpress\/images\/2014\/03\/Tecnomatix-for-Machinery-Manufacturing-Perkins-Engines-757x1024.jpg\" width=\"324\" height=\"435\" \/><\/A>When our customer, Perkins Engines Company, asks the question, \u201cWho says you can\u2019t have it all?\u201d\u2014 as they do in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.perkins.com\/cda\/files\/2566200\/7\/Tier%204%20Philosophy%20Brochure%20PN1964%20Oct10.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">the marketing material for their Tier 4 engines<\/A> \u2013 they\u2019re referring to the trade-off between emissions legislation and customer demands, and making the case that it\u2019s possible to satisfy both sets of requirements in a&nbsp;single diesel engine.<BR \/><BR \/>Perkins\u2019 customers (heavy equipment OEMs) want performance and fuel economy, along with other features such as durability and a good price. Emissions legislation, on the other hand, forces Perkins to continually reduce particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons, and carbon monoxide in engine emissions.<BR \/><BR \/>Perkins\u2019 80-year history of engineering expertise goes a long way toward finding the balance between often conflicting sets of design criteria. The company also has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.perkins.com\/cda\/layout?m=96600&amp;x=7&amp;id=4525837\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">a very proactive way of working with customers<\/A> to determine what they want and need.<BR \/><BR \/>Balancing conflicting requirements in an engine design is just half the challenge, however. Eventually, the engine must be built. Perkins engines are produced using the latest manufacturing technologies, which you can see in the first minute of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mqDSF5A-9uM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">this video<\/A>.<BR \/><BR \/>In the mid-2000s, when Perkins was at this point with the Tier 3 engine the company turned to Cliff Gillis, who was then manufacturing technology and systems manager, the person responsible for getting manufacturing facilities ready to produce new products. (Gillis is now a senior project manager leading Global Projects Portfolio in the Order to Delivery Technical Services Organization.)<BR \/><BR \/>Gillis, a big believer in digital manufacturing simulation, established a process called virtual process planning for assembly (VPPA). \u201cThe stakes were high,\u201d Gillis&nbsp;recalled. \u201cLate-stage changes to expensive tooling or production processes would increase the risk of escalating costs and disrupt current production schedules, which could result in missed delivery commitments.\u201d<BR \/><BR \/>The idea behind VPPA was to create a digital representation of a Tier 3 engine assembly process (starting with their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=MZU6_1l8iSA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">award-winning Peterborough, UK facility<\/A>). They would then fine-tune the assembly in software so that late-stage changes wouldn\u2019t be required when real engines began to be built.<BR \/><BR \/>VPPA is built on a number of Siemens PLM Software products. In addition to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.plm.automation.siemens.com\/en_us\/products\/teamcenter\/index.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Teamcenter<\/A>, VPPA incorporates several products from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.plm.automation.siemens.com\/en_us\/products\/tecnomatix\/index.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Tecnomatix<\/A> suite, including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.plm.automation.siemens.com\/en_us\/products\/tecnomatix\/plant_design\/index.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Plant Simulation<\/A> discrete-event simulation software, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.plm.automation.siemens.com\/en_us\/products\/tecnomatix\/plant_design\/factorycad\/index.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">FactoryCAD<\/A> factory layout software, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.plm.automation.siemens.com\/en_us\/products\/tecnomatix\/assembly_planning\/jack\/index.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Jack<\/A> human simulation software.<BR \/><BR \/>Tecnomatix Plant Simulation software generates what Perkins calls a \u201cvirtual build event\u201d that builds the engine in the actual production line sequence. Production planners can manipulate the virtual build event, to observe various what-if scenarios, for example.<BR \/><BR \/>VPPA&nbsp;was a huge success for the Tier 3 engine program, preventing \u201ca significant number of issues that would have had a substantial cost impact later on, had they reached production,\u201d Gillis said.<BR \/><BR \/>Once actual production of Tier 3 engines started, the number of issues was significantly lower compared to previous new engine assemblies. \u201cAnd the team picked up all the major concerns that previously would have caused major disruption in the factory,\u201d Gillis added. \u201cPotential clashes with machines were identified; rigging equipment for engine tests was designed; and the engine-dispatch equipment was also designed and rationalized.\u201d<BR \/><BR \/>On the basis of that success, Perkins made VPPA&nbsp;a structured process within the organization, and it was used in the process planning for the Tier 4 engines as well.
