I wanted to share some information from two I sat in on.<BR \/><BR \/>The first was a panel discussion on Lean Product Development. Several customers and Siemens PLM folks were on the panel.<BR \/><BR \/><A href=\"http:\/\/event.plmworld.org\/management-connection\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Raj Khoshoo<\/A>, vice president of Strategic Initiatives at our company, kicked things off with an overview of some of the latest lean research and provided this framework for lean PLM implementation:<BR \/><BR \/><A href=\"http:\/\/siemens.pmhclients.com\/images\/uploads\/WindowsLiveWriterLeanEngineering_A9DCimage_4.png\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><\/A><A href=\"http:\/\/community.plm.automation.siemens.com\/legacyfs\/online\/wordpress\/images\/2009\/06\/WindowsLiveWriterLeanEngineering_A9DCimage_thumb_1.png\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><IMG class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2093\" src=\"http:\/\/community.plm.automation.siemens.com\/legacyfs\/online\/wordpress\/images\/2009\/06\/WindowsLiveWriterLeanEngineering_A9DCimage_thumb_1.png\" alt=\"WindowsLiveWriterLeanEngineering_A9DCimage_thumb_1\" width=\"244\" height=\"182\" \/><\/A>&nbsp;<BR \/><BR \/><A href=\"http:\/\/siemens.pmhclients.com\/index.php\/plm-connection-2009-podcast-jon-jarrett\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Jon Jarrett<\/A>, PLM World chair and senior manager of Engineering Systems at <A href=\"http:\/\/www.atk.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">ATK<\/A>, spoke about their product planning and the focus on improving traceability and configuration control for more streamline methods.<BR \/><BR \/><A href=\"http:\/\/www.plm.automation.siemens.com\/en_us\/about_us\/leadership\/grindstaff.shtml\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Chuck Grindstaff<\/A>, our own CTO, shared how our R&amp;D has focused on applying <A href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taiichi_Ohno\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Taiichi Ohno\u2019s<\/A>&nbsp;<A href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Muda_(Japanese_term)#The_seven_wastes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">seven areas of \u201cmuda\u201d<\/A> (meaning waste) to software product development:<BR \/><UL><BR \/>\t<LI>Overproduction<\/LI><BR \/>\t<LI>Wait<\/LI><BR \/>\t<LI>Transport<\/LI><BR \/>\t<LI>Processing<\/LI><BR \/>\t<LI>Inventory<\/LI><BR \/>\t<LI>Motion<\/LI><BR \/>\t<LI>Defects<\/LI><BR \/><\/UL><BR \/>Although the genesis of these wastes comes from manufacturing, the principles directly apply to product development.<BR \/><BR \/><A href=\"http:\/\/plmsavvy.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Laila Hirr<\/A>, a VP at PRION as well as PLM World\u2019s new management SIG chair and \u201cPLM Savvy\u201d blogger, shared how many companies have the technology they need but haven\u2019t changed their processes. She sees benefit to unified applications like Teamcenter with integrations to Microsoft Office so engineers don\u2019t have to jump in and out of applications. She also noted on the subject of internal change agents, that you need to have a long-term 3-5 year view.<BR \/><BR \/><A href=\"http:\/\/www.plm.automation.siemens.com\/en_us\/about_us\/leadership\/shook.shtml\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Dave Shook<\/A>, our senior VP\/managing director in the Americas, also shared key lessons learned at companies his team works with. He particularly noted many are reducing complexity in their product development process so they can use that saved effort in their bid process. He highlighted several customers who presented at an executive event last fall.
