This week is <A href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalroboticsweek.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">National Robotics Week<\/A> in the U.S. Recently EngineeringUK led <A href=\"http:\/\/www.thebigbangfair.co.uk\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Big Bang UK<\/A>,&nbsp; an annual educational fair that inspires more than 50,000 children and young adults to pursue STEM careers.&nbsp;<BR \/><BR \/>Some of my UK colleagues \u2013 Anna Garton, Mike Brown, Cassandra Coe, Russell Brook and Paul Brown \u2013 were there with colleagues from other Siemens businesses, including healthcare and energy. Together they highlighted the types of Siemens careers that require STEM graduates and the role engineering plays in developing technology for a changing world.<!--more--><A title=\"Big Bang 2012-094 by Siemens PLM Software, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/31274959@N08\/6902604818\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><IFRAME width=\"425\" height=\"355\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/lI3rsaSiA04\"><\/IFRAME><\/A><BR \/><BR \/>Dame <A href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ellen_MacArthur\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Ellen MacArthur<\/A> was at the event and in the video. In 2005, she broke the world record for the fastest solo circumnavigation of the globe. She shared in the video:<BR \/><\/P><BLOCKQUOTE>\u201cWhen you see their eyes light up, you start to see them think maybe I could do that\u2026it opens opportunities up for young people.\u201d<\/BLOCKQUOTE><BR \/>The event is organized by Engineering UK and celebrates young people\u2019s achievements in science and engineering with annual awards. It was good to hear they named <A href=\"http:\/\/regional.thebigbangfair.co.uk\/nsec\/jessicas_story.cfm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Jessica Jones<\/A> UK\u2019s first female Young Engineer of the year. It\u2019s clear she doesn\u2019t see any gender barriers, noting in the video: \u201cI don\u2019t understand why it\u2019s perceived as a male\u2019s discipline.\u201d<BR \/><BR \/>Anna shared with me:<BR \/><BLOCKQUOTE>\u201cWe need to create and inspire tomorrow\u2019s talent by engaging them in STEM. Attendees were ages 7-18 and had a lot of fun in our F1 Red Bull Racing simulator. They could race one lap to win prizes for the best time each day. We also had a Solid Edge station set up for children to play with the software. We had actual physical parts of the Red Bull F1 car for them to touch and see what detail and planning goes into making a race car.\u201d&nbsp;<\/BLOCKQUOTE><BR \/>It seems the simulator brought out the kid in everyone \ud83d\ude09 , including Siemens executive Roland Aurich.<BR \/><A title=\"Big Bang 2012-317 by PeachKB, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/78118623@N02\/6850196666\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><IMG src=\"http:\/\/farm7.staticflickr.com\/6050\/6850196666_ddea1d2e17_n.jpg\" alt=\"Big Bang 2012-317\" width=\"320\" height=\"213\" \/><\/A><BR \/><BR \/>Mike found the event a great opportunity to talk to students, teachers, parents and famous TV stars.&nbsp;<BR \/><BLOCKQUOTE>&#8220;It was good to meet so many motivated students. They asked some really good questions -giving me hope that the future of humanity is safe thanks to these aspiring engineers.&nbsp; Parents were keen to try and squeeze into the Red Bull simulator and find out about the many different career opportunities within engineering.&nbsp; It was also great to talk to TV legend Robert Llewellyn (Kryten from the BBC SciFi comedy Red Dwarf).&nbsp; Robert was very interested in our work with the <A href=\"http:\/\/www.greenpower.co.uk\/about\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Greenpower challenge<\/A> and explained his interest in electric cars.\u201d<\/BLOCKQUOTE><BR \/>Here Mike shows a young student Solid Edge.<BR \/><A title=\"Big Bang 2012-153 by PeachKB, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/78118623@N02\/6996328427\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><IMG src=\"http:\/\/farm7.staticflickr.com\/6047\/6996328427_7eea3934bb.jpg\" alt=\"Big Bang 2012-153\" width=\"333\" height=\"500\" \/><\/A><BR \/><BLOCKQUOTE>You can see more photos from the event on <A href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/x\/t\/0094009\/photos\/78118623@N02\/sets\/72157629618630911\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Siemens UK<\/A> and <A href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/31274959@N08\/sets\/72157629748159633\/with\/6902604818\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Siemens PLM Flickr<\/A> sites.<\/BLOCKQUOTE><BR \/>Anna told me they had a giant message board in the Siemens booth with various questions\/comments for students to write responses.
