Digital Transformation achieved with Siemens PLM Software and AWS

As our industrial customers and peers seek to achieve digital transformation in their businesses, cutting edge technology services and partnerships with industry experts are providing critical pieces to the puzzle.
We saw this firsthand at the AWS Transformation Day event in Munich in September 2018. At this event, Siemens was recognized and took home two awards for gaining status in the AWS Industrial Software Competency with our Teamcenter and MindSphere solutions. Software companies—both new and not so new—were part of this Transformation Day event, where countless customer stories were discussed. These stories illustrated how pairing cutting-edge information technology with enterprise operational technology can make a tremendous impact for companies embracing the changes brought on by this era of Industry 4.0.
The location for this event—an old train station warehouse with lots of industrial character—couldn’t have been more fitting. Brenda Discher, Siemens PLM Software’s Senior Vice President, Strategy & Marketing, who delivered one of the keynote presentations, was able to get a behind the scenes (literally behind the main stage) glimpse of the old train station. At one point in history, the train tracks and equipment onsite were likely used to move industry leaders across the country, helping them to the next stop in their innovation journeys.

Helping our customers along their own innovation paths is at the heart of everything we do at Siemens. Our partnership with AWS is a great opportunity to do just that, and that is why are excited to be part of the AWS Industrial Software Competency launch.
The AWS Competency Program
The AWS Competency Program is designed to highlight AWS Partner Network (APN) Partners who have demonstrated technical proficiency and proven customer success in specialized solution areas. Our recognition and inclusion in the Industrial Software Competency Launch from its outset speaks volumes about our leadership in the industrial realm for Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) and Internet of Things (IoT). To receive this designation, we worked closely with AWS engineers to validate the security, reliability, functionality and performance of both Teamcenter and MindSphere on AWS. Like Siemens, AWS has high standards for excellence, and being selected as one of the chair vendors is high praise for the value our products deliver. This stamp of approval is another reason that customers can feel confident that when they deploy Teamcenter and MindSphere on AWS, they’re using a best-in-class solution.

Technology leaders across the globe
While Siemens is a billion-dollar company that is just turning 171 years young and AWS is only 13 years old, we have a lot in common. In the same way that Siemens has been at the forefront of countless advancements in industrial technology over the last century and a half, AWS largely invented the public cloud computing market, and continues to be the leader in this space. They’re constantly adding new services and additional data center facilities across the globe, demonstrating their relentless commitment to innovation. That commitment to innovation is only one of the many reasons that enterprises across the world are migrating their applications to AWS—they’re also saving money, becoming more agile, and spending more time focused on adding value to their business instead of managing the technology that powers it, just to name a few. Running Teamcenter and MindSphere-based workloads on AWS allows customers to enjoy these same benefits for their industrial applications on their journeys toward a more agile, cost-effective, secure, and most importantly—more innovative enterprise.
As many of you know, we’ve been making this same journey as part of our commitment to innovation for the better part of a decade, and the results speak for themselves. By connecting assets and people that were previously unconnected and leveraging cloud-based services and IoT to answer questions that few dared to ask before, we’re seeing the immense possibilities enabled through digital transformation. For example, at our Amberg facility, by drilling down into our production lines, we’ve been able to reduce our carbon footprint and save €20,000 in two weeks. At our Bad Neustadt facility, we’re using KUKU robots in concert with the digital twin of performance to build electric motors more efficiently and with 10% less downtime. Our customers who leverage AWS, such as, America Makes, who is using it to drive the additive manufacturing sector forward, are realizing the benefits of the cloud to get their products to market faster. MindSphere, Teamcenter, and AWS have been critical to these achievements.
In the same way that the last decade has proven the monumental business impacts made possible by the cloud, we feel that in the years to come, customers will find new ways to illustrate the power of the fully digitalized industrial business.
With that in mind, Siemens can’t wait to see how our customers are going to leverage MindSphere, Teamcenter, and AWS together to achieve great things.
