{"id":114,"date":"2023-04-17T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-04-17T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/insights-hub\/?p=114"},"modified":"2026-03-27T09:57:05","modified_gmt":"2026-03-27T13:57:05","slug":"future-world-series-hackathons-midterm-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/insights-hub\/2023\/04\/17\/future-world-series-hackathons-midterm-update\/","title":{"rendered":"Future World Series hackathons: Midterm update"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>We\u2019re halfway through the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/siemens.mindsphere.io\/en\/future-world-series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Future World Series<\/a> at Expo 2020 Dubai, but we\u2019re not slowing down!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With over 200 participants, including different nations, multilateral organizations, businesses and educational institutions, Expo 2020 Dubai connects communities from around the world to share ideas and work together.\u200b As part of this initiative, the Future World Series welcomes collaborators to join us in our continued efforts to evolve, improve and innovate the Smart City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hackathons are a big part of the Future World Series. We gather teams focused on creating innovative IoT solutions to tackle challenges that fall within the big five topics of the Expo: Buildings, Energy, Mobility, Industry and Water. The first three hackathons \u2013 Buildings, Energy and Mobility \u2013 were successfully completed. Read on to learn about the winning solutions created by the pioneering teams. But first, let\u2019s look at what\u2019s still to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Upcoming hackathon challenges<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>February Hackathons<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In February, we will continue with two parallel hackathons, both tackling the topic of Industry:<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Future Industry Hack:<\/strong> Open challenge for industrial IoT solutions. Teams will be using both IIoT and Mendix to develop their apps. <a href=\"https:\/\/siemens.mindsphere.io\/en\/future-world-series\/industry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Learn more<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>MHP Future Factory Hack:<\/strong> Co-hosted challenge with MHP \u2013 A Porsche Company, focusing on the jointly developed digital twin for production. <a href=\"https:\/\/siemens.mindsphere.io\/en\/future-world-series\/co-host-challenges#MHP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Learn more<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>When:<\/strong>&nbsp;February 6-10, 2022 | Pitch Day on February 9, 2022<br><strong>Where:<\/strong> Expo 2020 Dubai &amp; online via livestream<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>March Hackathons<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>March includes a hackathon around Water, as well as another Mobility challenge focused on Transportation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Future Water Hack:<\/strong> Challenge to develop solutions to help the water industry continue their distribution of economical and efficient water supplies. <a href=\"https:\/\/siemens.mindsphere.io\/en\/future-world-series\/water\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Learn more<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mastercard Future Transportation Hack:<\/strong> Participants will create IoT solutions for different methods of transportation: it must calculate carbon emissions and recommend the most eco-friendly routes \u2013 all in one application. <a href=\"https:\/\/siemens.mindsphere.io\/en\/future-world-series\/mastercard-future-transportation-hack\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Learn more<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>When:<\/strong>&nbsp;March 6-10, 2022<br><strong>Where:<\/strong>&nbsp;Expo 2020 Dubai &amp; online via Livestream<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Congratulations to the Building, Energy and Mobility hackathon winners<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re delighted to celebrate the success of the following winners of the Future World Series hackathons. These participants created innovative solutions to create a better future, together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Future Building Hack<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Winner: <\/strong>Fusebox<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The start-up:<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>Fusebox connects smart infrastructure with energy markets. Numerous smaller consumers and generators are gathered together as a single energy consumer through a Virtual Power Plant (VPP). This enables consumers to reduce individual costs, and in addition makes the electricity grid more efficient and carbon neutral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The idea:<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>The Fusebox application bridges energy markets and smart buildings in the Siemens industrial IoT ecosystem. With this solution, both new and existing customers, such as commercial and retail buildings, industrial buildings, energy storage devices, EV charging stations, etc., can unlock the benefits of the Fusebox demand response service by connecting to the Fusebox consumption management and balancing platform in a simplified way. &nbsp;<br><br><a href=\"https:\/\/siemens.mindsphere.io\/en\/future-world-series\/buildings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Learn more about the Building hackathon winner and finalists \u2192<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Future Energy Hack<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Winner:<\/strong> Ekonno<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The start-up:<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>Ekkono is a Swedish software company that provides machine learning \u2013 not just inference \u2013 at the edge. Ekkono\u2019s edge machine learning software runs onboard machines, vehicles and more \u2013 enabling smart, self-learning and predictive features.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The idea:<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>Ekkono conceived an incremental learning solution for a smart and energy-efficient indoor climate controller. Their solution demonstrates how Ekkono\u2019s edge machine learning software complements indsutrial IoT and opens up the possibility of comprehensive maintenance and optimization solutions.<br><br><a href=\"https:\/\/siemens.mindsphere.io\/en\/future-world-series\/energy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Learn more about the Energy hackathon winner and finalists \u2192<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Future Mobility Hack<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Winner: <\/strong>Exomotion<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The start-up:<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>Exomotion is on a mission to enhance the quality of life for people with disabilities by providing robotic transportation services in indoor environments such as airports and hospitals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The idea:<\/strong>&nbsp;<br>Exomotion\u2019s hackathon solution connects their innovative wheelchair to the industrial IoT. Using IIoT as their main cloud solution for monitoring and managing devices, they can use IoT sensors and actuators in the environment to&nbsp;safely navigate passengers with reduced mobility through airports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/siemens.mindsphere.io\/en\/future-world-series\/mobility\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Learn more about the Mobility hackathon winner and finalists \u2192<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What\u2019s next at the Future World Series<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We will continue the success of the hackathons with the Industry hackathon in February and the Water hackathon in March.
