{"id":848,"date":"2018-01-03T11:26:37","date_gmt":"2018-01-03T18:26:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.mentor.com\/xpedition\/?p=848"},"modified":"2026-03-27T09:29:23","modified_gmt":"2026-03-27T13:29:23","slug":"behind-the-tla-winners-thales-alenia-space","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/electronic-systems-design\/2018\/01\/03\/behind-the-tla-winners-thales-alenia-space\/","title":{"rendered":"Behind the TLA Winners: Thales Alenia Space"},"content":{"rendered":"<article class=\"blog-content blog-content-single\"><em>This is the sixth in a series of blog posts showcasing the winning designs from the 27<sup>th<\/sup> Annual PCB Technology Leadership Awards.<\/em><\/article>\n<article><\/article>\n<p>The 2st place winner in the<strong> Military &amp; Aerospace<\/strong> category is<strong> Thales Alenia Space,<\/strong> <strong><em>Italy.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This design is high-speed image processor for radar applications with a high data rate mass memory of 32Gbps .<\/p>\n<article><\/article>\n<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-851\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2017\/12\/Thales-Alenia-Space-PCB-520x381.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"520\" height=\"381\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-852\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2017\/12\/Thales-Alenia-Space.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"164\" height=\"73\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<article class=\"blog-content blog-content-single\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Design team:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Enrico Checchi, Gabriele Rocco and Giovanni Saldi<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Design flow used:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Xpedition\u00ae Enterprise (extensive use of HyperLynx)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0D<\/strong><strong>esign challenges:<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/article>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Constraints: <\/strong>Extensive focus on signal integrity, power integrity, cost, fabrication, assembly, test and reliability. Met target design time thanks to the usage of the simulation tools which reduced the verification time. Simulation also prevented the most significant hardware bugs. SI, PI, thermal, A\/D, vibration reduced iterations and cost.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Power Supply<\/strong>: PDN support for 40A current. Each memory module has a power request of 50W (5V, 10A). The IO power plan supported a 40A current flow without causing thermal\/electrical problems.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stack-up: <\/strong>Successful trade-off of max thickness to accomplish a high number of power voltages, high number of connections and minimization of noise between high-speed signals.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Electro-mechanical: <\/strong>Due to complexity, frequent ECAD\/MCAD collaboration\u00a0 between mechanical and electrical engineering was employed to achieve first pass success.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Technology<\/strong>: Via-in-pad technology h<span class=\"st\">elped to reduce inductance, increase density and achieve the most reliable and cost-effective PCB design.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<article class=\"blog-content blog-content-single\"><strong>Judge\u2019s comments:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;Dense board, great placement, nice route.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;An overall good design, dense and well routed.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Good use of VIP (via-in-pad) technology.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>About the Technology Leadership Awards<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Started in 1988, this program is the longest running competition of its kind in the EDA industry. In fact it is the industry\u2019s only award where design teams using Mentor\u2019s solutions receive recognition by <a href=\"https:\/\/mentor-tla.secure-platform.com\/a\/page\/Judges?cmpid=9049\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an independent panel of experts<\/a> for overcoming the most extreme challenges facing PCB design teams today.
