Digital Metrology Standards Consortium Model Based Characteristics standard approved by American National Standards Institute

The world of digital engineering is constantly evolving and innovating best practices. Earlier this June, the Digital Metrology Standards Consortium (DMSC) announced that its Model-Based Characteristics v1.0 (MBC 1.0), Persistent Identification and Related Digital Practices standard, designated as DMSC MBC v1.0 – 2026, has been approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) as an American National Standard (ANS). This achievement marks a significant step forward for Model-Based Enterprise (MBE) initiatives, particularly in defining and managing product characteristics.


Siemens Xcelerator characteristics authoring and management, originally released in Designcenter and Teamcenter 2412, is based around this standard. Along with this milestone, Siemens is proud to be recognized as a first mover in supporting this standard by the DMSC.

For decades, engineering design, quality and manufacturing relied heavily on 2D drawings to convey design intent and manufacturing specifications. These characterization methods often led to ambiguities, interpretation errors, and time-consuming manual processes. With a model-based approach, critical information is now authored within design and exists directly within the digital model itself.

The implementation of MBC 1.0 within Siemens Xcelerator will further enhance our customers’ ability to create truly intelligent digital twins, driving traceability and efficiency throughout the model-based enterprise.

Business Studies was Jamie's degree of choice at university, which he tailored to marketing during his final year. He's always been intrigued by the role high-quality visualization plays in product design. Jamie's first job out of university was with an SDK renderer, giving him the writing experience he needed to tailor visualization content across a range of industries. He also previously worked at Sheffield Hallam University, where he provided key marketing support to students embarking on their journey through higher education. Since joining Siemens Digital Industries Software in 2018, Jamie has built on his visualization expertise to create content across a wide breadth of disciplines. Whilst at Siemens, he has developed his expertise with Designcenter NX CAD software, alongside other Siemens Xcelerator products, including Teamcenter, NX CAM and Simcenter. It's rather fitting that Jamie's story has come full circle with regards to visualization; Jamie is heavily involved in Immersive Engineering; a new collaboration between Sony and Siemens that combines a new XR headset with Immersive Designer; a software package developed by Siemens Digital Industries Software.
