By showing up in person and online at some of the biggest engineering education events around the world, the team gets a firsthand look at how learners, academia and industry are preparing for the future and how Siemens can further support them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Siemens is a regular contributor at major conferences including ASEE, SEFI and WEEF, where team members participate in shaping engineering education to meet industrial and societal needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We caught up with Shannon O\u2019Donnell, Siemens Academic and Global Future Workforce engagement leader and GEDC executive committee member, to learn more about why engaging the global engineering education ecosystem is so important for Siemens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Making meaningful connections: Students, faculty and industry<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most powerful ways Siemens is engaging the future workforce is through its global Student Ambassador Program. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe work with students who have used Siemens tools or interned with us,\u201d Shannon shared. \u201cIt\u2019s about helping them build a strong global network of peers and of professionals that they can rely on after graduation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Faculty engagement is equally hands-on, from guest lectures to collaborative discussions on how academic programs can evolve to meet industry needs. Shannon emphasized that Siemens is actively listening to educators to better understand how their goals are evolving, from integrating emerging technologies into coursework or identifying new opportunities for collaboration. \u201cWe want to support faculty as they build innovative, future-ready programs,\u201d she said, \u201cand that means supporting their efforts to stay aligned with the fast-changing demands of the engineering workforce.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the industry side, Siemens is conducting focus groups and listening to what employers need from the future workforce. These insights directly influence the team\u2019s direction\u2014especially when it comes to curriculum-aligned offerings.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"embed-videomanager\">\n<iframe allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/video.sw.siemens.com\/embed\/5b86491a-5490-4017-8620-6fe464aedbfd?\" scrolling=\"auto\" target=\"_parent\" style=\"position: absolute; top: 0px; left: 0px; width: 100%; height: 100%;\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><!-- Video Manager -->\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why in-person events matter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Digital engagement is essential for global scalability of programs, additionally, Shannon highlights that face-to-face conversations drive the deepest innovation. \u201cIn-person events give us the ability to go beyond the presentation,\u201d she said. \u201cThey help us better visualize and hear where the gaps are and how we can better support the full ecosystem we support through students, faculty and industry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/immersive-design-challenge.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Immersive Design Challenge<\/a>\u2014an industry-supported competition using emerging tech\u2014was a direct result of these conversations. \u201cWe realized students are drawn to hands-on, immersive experiences with cutting-edge tools. That inspired us to give them access to just that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What\u2019s creating excitement?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>From students to faculty to industry, one thing is clear: the community is energized by innovation and digital transformation. AI, sustainability and immersive technology are key areas generating buzz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shannon points to recent investments as proof of Siemens\u2019 commitment. \u201cIn 2025, we\u2019re investing approximately $15 billion in AI capabilities. When I meet with people \u2014 whether it\u2019s aerospace companies or research universities \u2014 there\u2019s a genuine excitement around partnering with Siemens.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Programs like the Skills for Sustainability Network are also an application-based draw. \u201cIt\u2019s not just about content,\u201d Shannon said. \u201cIt\u2019s about building a network\u2014creating spaces where peers can connect and build sustainability into the DNA of engineering education.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does Siemens value most from these events?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For Siemens, the most valuable outcomes are the connections and the momentum they create. \u201cSometimes I feel like a matchmaker \u2014 helping a university connect with a resource, or a school find a new tech solution. And when we help someone succeed, we succeed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples of innovation are already emerging. \u201cOne school in Europe is about to place a major order for immersive headsets. They\u2019re planning to build a case study and lead by example.
