What if you could learn theory and immediately apply that theory &#8211; while completing a project?&nbsp;A&nbsp;new lab sequence at the University of Michigan\u2019s Department of Aerospace Engineering enables students to do just that \u2013 learn theory and practice simultaneously, using a full PLM suite of technology from Siemens.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The initiative, led by&nbsp;George Halow&nbsp;and Anthony Waas, provided&nbsp;a shift in&nbsp;the traditional engineering&nbsp;curriculum&nbsp;through the creation of a&nbsp;lab sequence dedicated to Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE).&nbsp;The success of the course&nbsp;sequence prompted&nbsp;the&nbsp;Department of Aerospace&nbsp;to&nbsp;build&nbsp;the&nbsp;new Model-Based Systems Engineering Leadership Lab with support from Siemens and other corporate sponsors.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2021\/11\/employees-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4745\" width=\"714\" height=\"567\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2021\/11\/employees-1.png 687w, https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2021\/11\/employees-1-600x477.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 714px) 100vw, 714px\" \/><figcaption> <em>George Halow presented the Siemens Team with a plaque of gratitude for supporting the MBSE Leadership Lab at a small opening ceremony.&nbsp; Pictured Left to Right: George Halow, Melanie Spare, David Taylor, Gerry Deren,&nbsp;Nand Kochhar,&nbsp;Barry Chapman, Dale Tutt.<\/em> <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">THE NEED&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Aspiring engineers require a deep understanding of implementing real-world scenarios. A study&nbsp;of recent graduates conducted&nbsp;by&nbsp;the&nbsp;American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) found that only 1 in 5 students felt very prepared in their critical thinking competency after graduation. The lab includes a&nbsp;wide-variety&nbsp;of electrical engineering equipment, such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, continuity testers, and every circuit component imaginable. Students will also have access to different types of engineering software within its new state-of-the-art computing&nbsp;machines, including computer aided design, simulation testing, and product manufacturing and assembly.
