{"id":4312,"date":"2021-06-15T09:42:08","date_gmt":"2021-06-15T13:42:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/academic\/?p=4312"},"modified":"2026-03-26T08:17:41","modified_gmt":"2026-03-26T12:17:41","slug":"michigan-baja-racing-triumphant-in-unprecedented-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/academic\/michigan-baja-racing-triumphant-in-unprecedented-times\/","title":{"rendered":"Michigan Baja Racing: Triumphant in Unprecedented Times"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bajasae.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Baja SAE<\/a>&nbsp;competitions&nbsp;give&nbsp;teams&nbsp;of university students&nbsp;the opportunity to showcase engineering&nbsp;design&nbsp;and fabrication&nbsp;skills&nbsp;by building an off-road vehicle.&nbsp;The vehicles, which share many characteristics with&nbsp;dune buggies,&nbsp;must withstand&nbsp;a variety of dynamic events, including a&nbsp;four-hour endurance race at full speed&nbsp;while navigating&nbsp;various types of rough terrain, including rock crawls and drop offs.&nbsp;The vehicles also compete in&nbsp;static events, including sales presentation, cost report, and design judging.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Baja SAE competitions give students the opportunity to go beyond textbook theory by designing a real vehicle and competing it against students internationally. The competitions connect industry with academia, giving engineering students exposure to a variety of disciplines for future employment and providing them with knowledge and skills beyond engineering, including project and resource management, communication, and&nbsp;budgeting.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following&nbsp;a year of&nbsp;disconnect and&nbsp;separation&nbsp;resulting from&nbsp;the&nbsp;onset of the&nbsp;COVID-19 pandemic,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.michiganbajaracing.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Michigan Baja Racing<\/a>&nbsp;at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/umich.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">University of Michigan&nbsp;&#8211; Ann Arbor<\/a>&nbsp;has already&nbsp;made a&nbsp;triumphant return to Baja SAE competitions.&nbsp;Michigan Baja Racing is&nbsp;a&nbsp;student-run&nbsp;team that creates an entirely new off-road vehicle every year for the<s>&nbsp;<\/s>&nbsp;competition.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2021\/06\/UMBajaRacing-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2021\/06\/UMBajaRacing-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2021\/06\/UMBajaRacing-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2021\/06\/UMBajaRacing-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2021\/06\/UMBajaRacing-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2021\/06\/UMBajaRacing-2048x1536.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2021\/06\/UMBajaRacing-900x675.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Image: Michigan Baja Racing at the May 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sae.org\/attend\/student-events\/baja-sae-louisville\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Baja SAE Louisville Validation Event<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Like many schools,&nbsp;the pandemic affected the team greatly, causing&nbsp;significant&nbsp;workshop limitations and a&nbsp;design cycle&nbsp;that took place remotely for&nbsp;a majority of&nbsp;the time.&nbsp;Because of these challenges, Michigan Baja Racing had to reuse their chassis, the base frame of their vehicle, from the previous year.&nbsp;They took this challenge as an opportunity for innovation\u2014working&nbsp;together&nbsp;to redesign the vehicle\u2019s 4WD system&nbsp;to be capable with&nbsp;this chassis that was not meant to house the&nbsp;system. The team managed to find success during the pandemic&nbsp;by facing the challenges head on, while staying healthy&nbsp;and promoting the University of Michigan\u2019s health-conscious campus environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Returning to In-Person Designing and Manufacturing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While Michigan Baja Racing\u2019s vehicle is almost completely custom, the team holds innovation close to their&nbsp;heart, always searching for more ways to optimize their design.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe redesign every subsystem&nbsp;annually in order to continue pushing the boundaries of what each system can achieve,\u201d said&nbsp;Justin Osborn, the 4WD Lead of Michigan Baja Racing. \u201cOur multidisciplinary approach has helped introduce outside-of-the-box designs that push the team forward in new and exciting ways.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team begins their design process by&nbsp;setting goals based on how&nbsp;to improve&nbsp;each&nbsp;subsystem in the car&nbsp;from the previous year.&nbsp;The team members&nbsp;then conduct research on potential design improvements.&nbsp;They use an iterative design process,&nbsp;continuing to&nbsp;analyze, prototype, and redesign&nbsp;each subsystem until it is&nbsp;optimal&nbsp;for the goals they set.&nbsp;The design process&nbsp;induces a lot of collaboration\u2014team members are&nbsp;constantly asking each other for&nbsp;critiques and suggestions on their designs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Siemens&nbsp;software&nbsp;has&nbsp;played&nbsp;a critical role in Michigan Baja Racing\u2019s design process and team&nbsp;management.&nbsp;The team&nbsp;uses&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.plm.automation.siemens.com\/global\/en\/products\/nx\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NX<\/a>&nbsp;3D CAD&nbsp;tools to design&nbsp;the vehicle parts, including gearboxes, composite panels, tooling, and molds.&nbsp;They use&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.plm.automation.siemens.com\/global\/en\/products\/simcenter\/STAR-CCM.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Simcenter&nbsp;STAR-CCM+<\/a>&nbsp;to optimize the aerodynamic performance of the vehicle.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following this extensive design process, the manufacturing and assembly of the vehicle begins,&nbsp;using the finalized designs.&nbsp;The team\u2019s favorite software,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.plm.automation.siemens.com\/global\/en\/products\/teamcenter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Teamcenter<\/a>, allows effective and efficient tracking and managing&nbsp;of&nbsp;all phases of the vehicle creation process.&nbsp;They also use&nbsp;Teamcenter&nbsp;for&nbsp;version&nbsp;management of design files&nbsp;from initial design through complete fabrication.&nbsp;Each year,&nbsp;Michigan Baja Racing&nbsp;tries to&nbsp;finish assembling the vehicle&nbsp;about one month&nbsp;before competitions&nbsp;in order to conduct&nbsp;sufficient&nbsp;testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2021\/06\/MichiganBajaRacing-1024x683.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4313\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2021\/06\/MichiganBajaRacing-1024x683.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2021\/06\/MichiganBajaRacing-600x400.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2021\/06\/MichiganBajaRacing-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2021\/06\/MichiganBajaRacing-900x600.jpeg 900w, https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2021\/06\/MichiganBajaRacing.jpeg 1086w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Image: Michigan Baja Racing&#8217;s Competition Vehicle for 2021<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Back to Competing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Returning to competitions in March 2021, Michigan Baja Racing participated in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sae.org\/attend\/student-events\/baja-sae-knowledge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Baja SAE Knowledge Event<\/a>,&nbsp;which took place virtually this year. For this competition, teams had to submit&nbsp;a cost report and a&nbsp;design paper. The teams also gave&nbsp;oral&nbsp;presentations<s>&nbsp;<\/s>.&nbsp;Michigan Baja Racing&nbsp;placed 3<sup>rd<\/sup>&nbsp;place overall, winning 1<sup>st<\/sup>&nbsp;in Business Presentation, 9<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;in Cost, and 9<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;in Design.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In May, Michigan Baja Racing attended the&nbsp;in-person&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sae.org\/attend\/student-events\/baja-sae-louisville\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Baja SAE Louisville Validation Event<\/a>&nbsp;along with 77 other teams for&nbsp;their&nbsp;second&nbsp;part&nbsp;of this competition series.&nbsp;This competition is where the technical inspection as well as&nbsp;all of&nbsp;the dynamic events, including the&nbsp;four-hour endurance race,&nbsp;occur.&nbsp;Other dynamic events include a maneuverability course, a sled pull, a hill climb, and an acceleration event.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This May, Michigan Baja Racing won 1<sup>st<\/sup>&nbsp;place overall&nbsp;(2<sup>nd<\/sup>&nbsp;in Maneuverability, 3<sup>rd<\/sup>&nbsp;in Acceleration, 4<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;in Endurance, 6<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;in Hill Climb, and 7<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;in Suspension).&nbsp;\u201cIt was great to be able to compete again and see all of the other teams and the great cars they brought out,\u201d Osborn said&nbsp;on this return to in-person competition.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When asked what&nbsp;is to come next season,&nbsp;Osborn&nbsp;said, \u201cFor the 2021-2022 season, we plan to build a new car. Many subsystems are already brainstorming significant redesigns to refine the vehicle and achieve our&nbsp;overall goals.\u201d&nbsp;They will again rely heavily on&nbsp;Siemens&nbsp;software tools for this&nbsp;all-new&nbsp;design challenge.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Congratulations&nbsp;on another great season, Michigan Baja Racing!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Siemens supports many student teams from around the world.
