{"id":4290,"date":"2021-06-03T14:19:11","date_gmt":"2021-06-03T18:19:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/academic\/?p=4290"},"modified":"2026-03-26T08:17:43","modified_gmt":"2026-03-26T12:17:43","slug":"siemens-software-bridges-the-gap-between-industry-and-academia-at-the-university-of-queensland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/academic\/siemens-software-bridges-the-gap-between-industry-and-academia-at-the-university-of-queensland\/","title":{"rendered":"Siemens Software Bridges the Gap Between Industry and Academia at the University of Queensland"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uq.edu.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> University of Queensland<\/a>&nbsp;(UQ), one of Australia\u2019s top research and teaching institutions, uses&nbsp;Siemens&nbsp;software to enhance&nbsp;students\u2019 industry knowledge&nbsp;and prepare them for a future in the workforce.&nbsp;The UQ-Siemens&nbsp;partnership began in 2018 and has already made many advancements,&nbsp;including establishing an Industry 4.0&nbsp;testlab&nbsp;network with the&nbsp;government and five&nbsp;other&nbsp;universities. The testlab network&#8217;s goal is to improve Australian manufacturing&nbsp;competitiveness&nbsp;by&nbsp;adopting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plm.automation.siemens.com\/global\/en\/our-story\/glossary\/industry-4-0\/29278\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Industry 4.0<\/a> technologies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, what&nbsp;is the&nbsp;role&nbsp;of&nbsp;UQ students in this partnership?&nbsp;Many students&nbsp;use&nbsp;Siemens&nbsp;software in engineering curricula and research projects. Additionally, students&nbsp;on competition teams&nbsp;can team&nbsp;up with one of Siemens\u2019 industry partners for unique learning experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2021\/06\/university-of-queensland-82298-feature2-640x360_tcm27-98091.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4295\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2021\/06\/university-of-queensland-82298-feature2-640x360_tcm27-98091.jpg 640w, https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2021\/06\/university-of-queensland-82298-feature2-640x360_tcm27-98091-600x338.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Connecting Industry and Academia&nbsp;via&nbsp;Siemens<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/uqracing.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UQ Racing<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uqspace.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UQ Space<\/a>,&nbsp;the university\u2019s student competition teams, collaborated with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.helimods.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HeliMods<\/a>, an aerospace technology company and&nbsp;Siemens&nbsp;customer.&nbsp;HeliMods&nbsp;hosted industry workshops&nbsp;and guest lectures and even provided internship opportunities for the students. The partnership program lasted&nbsp;10&nbsp;weeks&nbsp;with&nbsp;the&nbsp;goal of teaching students how to take charge&nbsp;of their own learning . They also learned how to incorporate industry and software knowledge into their engineering challenges.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>James&nbsp;Helsham, an aerospace engineer at&nbsp;HeliMods, described the program as \u201cproviding industry best practice guidance on how to use&nbsp;Siemens&nbsp;software&#8221; to&nbsp;student competition teams.&nbsp;Siemens&nbsp;software acted as a learning tool. When the onset of the pandemic forced the program to shift online,&nbsp;Siemens&nbsp;software allowed for&nbsp;HeliMods&nbsp;to adapt quickly to a virtual teaching&nbsp;format.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students on UQ Racing and UQ Space&nbsp;constantly&nbsp;apply&nbsp;concepts they learned from&nbsp;HeliMods&nbsp;in their own projects. For instance, UQ Racing uses&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.plm.automation.siemens.com\/global\/en\/products\/simcenter\/STAR-CCM.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Simcenter&nbsp;STAR-CCM+<\/a>&nbsp;for aerodynamic simulations, a software that helps them not only in the classroom and at competitions but also in preparation for entering the industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>UQ Racing and all the software we use fits perfectly with everything I do in my degree. In every&nbsp;course, I use&nbsp;Siemens&nbsp;software to get the best GPA possible.<\/p><cite>William&nbsp;Idoine, UQ student and head of UQ Racing\u2019s internal combustion aerodynamics team&nbsp;<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Using Siemens Software for University of Queensland Curricula and Research<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Over 900 first-year engineering students use&nbsp;Simcenter&nbsp;STAR-CCM+ software to learn wing modeling and two-phase mixing modeling, and around 300 students in an introductory mechanical design and manufacturing course are&nbsp;learning&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.plm.automation.siemens.com\/global\/en\/products\/nx\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NX<\/a>.&nbsp;Students use both STAR-CCM+ and NX in more advanced engineering courses as well.&nbsp;Siemens\u2019 self-paced learning&nbsp;platform&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/academic\/learning-advantage-is-now-xcelerator-academy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Xcelerator&nbsp;Academy<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;allows for students to receive extra assistance&nbsp;as&nbsp;needed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, UQ&nbsp;uses&nbsp;Siemens&nbsp;software at the business school and for Ph.D. projects. Several&nbsp;including&nbsp;advanced research&nbsp;with&nbsp;the Queensland Brain Institute and the Sustainable Minerals Institute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Continuing to Make an Impact<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The UQ-Siemens&nbsp;partnership has already accomplished many feats,&nbsp;and&nbsp;they are still looking to make even more advancements. Future goals are to expand the use of the&nbsp;Simcenter&nbsp;portfolio,&nbsp;to&nbsp;establish opportunities for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.plm.automation.siemens.com\/global\/en\/products\/manufacturing-operations-center\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Opcenter<\/a>&nbsp;software for manufacturing operations management, and&nbsp;to&nbsp;adopt&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.plm.automation.siemens.com\/global\/en\/products\/mindsphere\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MindSphere<\/a>&nbsp;industrial IoT as a service solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To learn more about the University of Queensland\u2019s partnership with Siemens, check&nbsp;out&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.plm.automation.siemens.com\/global\/en\/our-story\/customers\/university-of-queensland\/98089\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this<\/a>&nbsp;case study.
