This event challenges university undergraduate and graduate students to design, fabricate, develop, and race formula style racecars. Teams compete in static events such as business, design, and cost in front of judges from the auto industry and they compete in dynamic events such as acceleration, skid pad, autocross, endurance, and efficiency. For both combustion engine and electric-powered racecars, the competition was held with 58 teams from July 29<sup>th<\/sup> to August 4<sup>th<\/sup>, 2019 at the Red Bull Ring Formula 1 track facility in Spielberg, Austria.FSA specifically draws elite teams from all over Europe (and some overseas teams) as it is the best event to prepare for the \u2018Olympics\u2019 of Formula Student \u2013 at Formula Student Germany the week following.<span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-center\" style=\"width: 999px\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"'17 FSA pano photo.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2019\/09\/17-FSA-pano-photo-1.jpg\" alt=\"'17 FSA pano photo.jpg\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>All-teams group photo from 2017 FSA event. (Due to weather, 2018 and 2019 group photos were missed.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>World-class teams at FSA use Siemens software<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Siemens\u2019 academic program has been supporting Formula Student Austria for several years as well as Formula Student events in North America<u><\/u>, Germany, China, and Japan, plus<a href=\"https:\/\/community.plm.automation.siemens.com\/t5\/Academic-News\/Spaceport-America-Cup-Student-Competition-Soars-to-30-000-Feet\/ba-p\/616751\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">&nbsp;aerospace competitions<\/a>. These elite students are highly sought after by industry because of their proven readiness for the engineering workforce.<span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-center\" style=\"width: 999px\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"TU Munich 1st place.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2019\/09\/TU-Munich-1st-place-1.jpg\" alt=\"TU Munich 1st place.jpg\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>The 2019 FSA <strong>1<sup>st<\/sup> place overall<\/strong> for <strong>Formula Electric<\/strong> was won by the <a href=\"https:\/\/tufast-racingteam.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\"><strong>Technical University of Munich<\/strong> <\/a>team, seen here in the judges\u2019 bay ready for FSA DESIGN judging- supported by Siemens Software, such as NX for 3D-CAD, FAE, CAM for design and fabrication, with carbon fiber downforce aero package simulated and optimized with STAR-CCM+ software<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The FSA challenge is heightened by the addition of business and cost management, marketing, recruiting, and training new members and logistics. These students have proven to be passionate, hardworking, smart, and high initiative engineers, while handling difficult engineering theory classes as well as 80-hour weeks or more to compete at the highest levels in Formula Student. In addition, the teams have to recruit and train new members every year as students graduate. There is a huge need to address the worldwide <a href=\"https:\/\/community.plm.automation.siemens.com\/t5\/Digital-Transformations\/Engineering-our-way-out-of-the-skills-gap\/ba-p\/443421\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">engineering workforce gap<\/a> due to aging demographics that exist in most of the developed countries. This is made possible by the way STAR-CCM+ interconnects each step of the simulation process through robust, high quality meshing. On the same forum as this article, students can find many best-practice tips and techniques.<\/p>\n<p>For printed circuit board (PCB) design, software like <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pads.com\/professional\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">PADS Professional<\/a><\/u> replaces common buggy \u2018freeware\u2019 PCB software. This professional level PCB took is especially critical for Formula Electric teams who have to design custom high voltage, high current boards packed into a compact space in their racecars. For example, The PCB verification tool, <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentor.com\/pcb\/hyperlynx\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">Hyperlynx<\/a><\/u>, checks 8 types of electrical integrity to prevent glitches during the endurance event.<\/p>\n<p>More and more teams ask for these Siemens software tools along with product data management, mechatronics, and <a href=\"https:\/\/community.sw.siemens.com\/s\/question\/0D54O000061xpDJSAY\/siemens-plm-software-in-fsaeformula-student\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">our other software<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We also provide supported teams with no-cost <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plm.automation.siemens.com\/global\/en\/our-story\/newsroom\/siemens-press-release\/43687\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">on-demand\/online training<\/a> and Formula Student-specific design tutorials<span style=\"font-family: inherit\">. The team is an advanced practitioner of Digital Twin engineering methodology \u2013 an absolute necessity when designing together across an ocean and 8,000 kilometers! One of only a couple of of teams in the world that built and campaigned 3 cars in one season: Electric, Driverless &amp; Combustion racecars.
