I enjoy hearing about their interests and helping them navigate the worlds of high school, robotics, and life,\u201d says Darrell Teegarden of Mentor Graphics, a Siemens business. Teegarden has been a mentor with the Lake Monsters since 2008. After an introductory meeting with his high-school-age son about starting an FRC team at Lakeridge High School, he was hooked and has been with the team ever since. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Lake Monsters use the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentor.com\/products\/sm\/events\/systemvision-cloud--a-new-online-environment-for-robotic-system-design\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mentor\nGraphics SystemVision<\/a> as a tool for modeling and simulating closed-loop\ncontrol of motor systems. The Lake Monsters have\ndistributed 1,050 make-and-take robots, and four EV3s to these children\u2019s\nhospitals to provide positivity and control to these children facing\nsignificant medical conditions and lengthy hospital stays. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI pretty much grew up in hospitals because I had club feet\nand I was deaf and I knew there was some way we could bring STEM to these\nhospitals, where these kids don\u2019t have much control and feel helpless. It honors the team that best represents a model for other teams to emulate and best embodies the mission of <em>FIRST.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Chairman&#039;s Submission Video 2020\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IwVcw0SfDpE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor me, this honor was just a confirmation that the work we\u2019re doing is good and the message we had worked so hard to spread to the community was being recognized,\u201d says Littler. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cReceiving the award boosted all of our morale in this time. I\nwas feeling down because we can\u2019t see each other or meet which was a big part\nof my day. Knowing that we worked hard enough to receive such an honor was\nreally awesome for me,\u201d says Lindsay. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amid the COVID-19 quarantine, students have still been utilizing their outreach. They have been participating in virtual one-on-ones with patients at Doernbechers and using their own 3D printers to create \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prusa3d.com\/covid19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ear saves<\/a>\u201d for facemasks as well as sturdier headband components of heavy-duty masks for patients and employees at Doernbechers. Suddenly these students went from spending every day together to not seeing each other at all. They would come up to me and ask, \u2018When\u2019s the next time we\u2019re going to the hospital?\u201d and genuinely asked to get involved. It was very meaningful to me because it showed that we\u2019re building people.
