{"id":2491,"date":"2016-04-21T09:07:36","date_gmt":"2016-04-21T16:07:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.plm.automation.siemens.com\/t5\/Academic-News\/Retro-design-inspires-Loughborough-University-student-to-create\/ba-p\/343505"},"modified":"2026-03-26T08:11:13","modified_gmt":"2026-03-26T12:11:13","slug":"retro-design-inspires-loughborough-university-student-to-create-nx-rendering","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/academic\/retro-design-inspires-loughborough-university-student-to-create-nx-rendering\/","title":{"rendered":"Retro design inspires Loughborough University student to create NX Rendering"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><P>We haven&#8217;t had a female student win the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.plm.automation.siemens.com\/t5\/Student-Design-Contest\/con-p\/Student-Design-Contest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">student design competition<\/A> in a while so we were thrilled when Alison Herbert,&nbsp;a&nbsp;Product Design Engineering student&nbsp;from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Loughborough University<\/A> in the UK won our monthly competition.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><STRONG><span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-center\" style=\"width: 400px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2019\/09\/Alison-Herbert_small-1.jpg\" alt=\"Alison Herbert_small.jpg\" title=\"Alison Herbert_small.jpg\" \/><span class=\"lia-inline-image-caption\" onclick=\"event.preventDefault();\">Here is Alison recieving her prize from Dr Mey Goh. Mey is the Programme Director for the Product Design Engineering Degree programme. Robb Doyle is Alison&#8217;s University Teacher. .<\/span><\/span><\/STRONG><\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Alison&nbsp;created her image for a modelling and visualisation project to produce a range of&nbsp;realistic&nbsp;and striking images of an existing product.&nbsp;She&nbsp;chose the Roberts&nbsp;Revival Mini Radio due to its iconic design, 1960&#8217;s styling combined with modern technology and materials.&nbsp;<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>A&nbsp;particularly challenging part of the build was creating a convincing leather handle including the bold stitching which&nbsp;Alison felt&nbsp;was a distinguishing feature of the design. It required some experimentation with NX functions but was eventually produced using sweep and pattern features on NX.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-center\" style=\"width: 400px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2019\/09\/Roberts-Revival-Mini-1.jpg\" alt=\"Roberts Revival Mini.jpg\" title=\"Roberts Revival Mini.jpg\" \/><\/span><\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Other features of NX used to develop this model include simple extrudes and hole features, raster image to produce the 3D pin logo and blend and chamfers. To apply materials to the model and render the image Alison&nbsp;used advanced studio, this allowed&nbsp;her to edit materials to replicate those of the real product and alter the modelling environment such as the lighting and background.&nbsp;<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Alison said <EM>&#8220;I&nbsp;would highly recommend NX to another student for engineering\/design CAD purposes.
