Teams from around the world came to Hawthorne California USA to test \u201cpods\u201d propelled inside a near-vacuum chamber at high speeds. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spacex.com\/Hyperloop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Hyperloop has often been described as the \u201cfifth mode of transportation\u201d<\/A><\/P><br \/>\n<P><BR \/>This is the second major Hyperloop competition sponsored by SpaceX and this time students had the opportunity to bring their design visions into reality. <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.plm.automation.siemens.com\/t5\/Academic-News\/Hyperloop-Design-Challenge-a-Glimpse-into-the-Future-of\/ba-p\/337181\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The first competition in January 2016 at Texas A&amp;M University was the Design Weekend. Over 100 student teams from 5 continents vied for an opportunity to advance to the Test Weekend in Hawthorne.<\/A><\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>There were 30 teams taking part in this phase of the trial but only three teams took part in a test run this weekend: Delft from the Technical University of Delft in the Netherlands, MIT Hyperloop from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and WARR, from the Technical University of Munich<\/P><br \/>\n<P><span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-inline\" style=\"width: 400px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2019\/09\/umd-2.jpg\" alt=\"umd.jpg\" title=\"umd.jpg\" \/><span class=\"lia-inline-image-caption\" onclick=\"event.preventDefault();\">Siemens PLM Software is a sponsor of UMD Loop, the University of Maryland&#8217;s team of 50 undergraduate and graduate students who are competing in SpaceX&#8217;s Hyperloop Competition Weekend.<\/span><\/span><\/P><br \/>\n<P>Some of the winners include:<\/P><br \/>\n<UL><br \/>\n<LI>Delft University: Highest Overall Score; Design and Construction Award<\/LI><br \/>\n<LI>Technical University of Munich (WARR Hyperloop): Fastest Pod Award<\/LI><br \/>\n<LI>MIT: Safety and Reliability Award<\/LI><br \/>\n<LI><a href=\"http:\/\/www.umdloop.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">University of Maryland (UMD Loop)<\/A>: Performance and Operations Award<\/LI><br \/>\n<LI>University of Wisconsin-Madison (Team Badgerloop): Pod Innovation Award<\/LI><br \/>\n<LI>rLoop: Pod Innovation Award<\/LI><br \/>\n<\/UL><br \/>\n<P>MIT was one of the first teams to go down the track. SpaceX trackers showed the pod traveling 90 kph (56 mph) at one point in the tube.<\/P><br \/>\n<P><span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-inline\" style=\"width: 400px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2019\/09\/A1_Hyperloop-900x675-1.jpg\" alt=\"A1_Hyperloop--900x675.jpg\" title=\"A1_Hyperloop--900x675.jpg\" \/><span class=\"lia-inline-image-caption\" onclick=\"event.preventDefault();\">Photo courtesy of Illini Hyperloop<\/span><\/span><\/P><br \/>\n<P>Siemens provides PLM software, controllers, and electric motors to several of the teams in the Hyperloop competition. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.plm.automation.siemens.com\/en_us\/academic\/projects-competitions\/index.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Siemens is a long time sponsor of many student engineering competitions around the world and is committed to empowering the next generation of digital talent.<\/A><\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>The next stage of the competition is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spacex.com\/sites\/spacex\/files\/2016_0831_hyperloop_competition_ii_rules.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">set to take place this summer.<\/A> The date has yet to be announced but we\u2019ll be looking forward to the technological innovations created by these student teams that will be unveiled over the coming year.<\/P><br \/>\n<P><span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-inline\" style=\"width: 400px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2019\/09\/jsspod-1.jpg\" alt=\"jsspod.jpg\" title=\"jsspod.jpg\" \/><span class=\"lia-inline-image-caption\" onclick=\"event.preventDefault();\">I got to sit in the BadgerLoop pod!<\/span><\/span><BR \/>One day in the not too distant future, I\u2019ll be able to hop on board and travel hundreds of miles in a Hyperloop pod designed by these outstanding engineering students.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Jerry<\/P><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A nearly mile long enclosed white tube was the focus of an innovative futuristic competition this past weekend.
