{"id":1696,"date":"2016-04-22T04:05:00","date_gmt":"2016-04-22T11:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.plm.automation.siemens.com\/t5\/Academic-News\/3rd-student-to-win-Student-Design-Competition-from-Ulster\/ba-p\/343512"},"modified":"2026-03-26T08:09:23","modified_gmt":"2026-03-26T12:09:23","slug":"3rd-student-to-win-student-design-competition-from-ulster-university","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/academic\/3rd-student-to-win-student-design-competition-from-ulster-university\/","title":{"rendered":"3rd student to win Student Design Competition from Ulster University"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><P>Stuart McMichael is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulster.ac.uk\/courses\/course-finder\/201718\/beng-hons-clean-technology-9736\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">BEng Clean Technology<\/A> student (its a mix of mechanical and electrical engineering with greater emphasis on sustainability and renewable energy) at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulster.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Ulster University<\/A> in Northern Ireland.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Stuart was wandering around at home looking for products he could try and design himself in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.plm.automation.siemens.com\/en_us\/academic\/resources\/solid-edge\/educators\/index.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Solid Edge<\/A>. He spotted the lawnmower and thought it would be a challenge because of the curvature of the product. He had to learn to use surfacing to a more advanced level than what he had had been taught at university to help design the base and the collector to get the correct curvature.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P><span class=\"lia-inline-image-display-wrapper lia-image-align-center\" style=\"width: 400px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sw.siemens.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2019\/09\/Lawnmower-2.jpg\" alt=\"Lawnmower.jpg\" title=\"Lawnmower.jpg\" \/><\/span><\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>Stuart used many features of Solid Edge to name a few but not all he utilised&nbsp;for Solid Modeling: extrusions, revolve, sweeps, rounds, cuts and thicken. For Suface Modelling: blue surf, bound, inter-part copy &amp; swept and assemblies to help make the model tree tidier.<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>When asked whether Stuart would recommend Solid Edge to another student he said <EM>&#8220;Yes, I am currently on my placement year and the software that we use is PTC Creo, Solid Edge is a lot easier to understand. For sweeps \/ lofts with different cross sections it is a lot easier to do&nbsp;using Solid Edge than Creo. Surface modelling is also easier to learn.&#8221;<\/EM><\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>You can download your own <a href=\"http:\/\/www.plm.automation.siemens.com\/en_us\/academic\/resources\/solid-edge\/index.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Solid Edge license<\/A> and start creating your own design immediately!<\/P><\/p>\n<p><P>We are looking forward to see if there are more garden&nbsp;tools to hit our submissions desk&nbsp;from Ulster University or whether someone might&nbsp;design something totally different&nbsp;for the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.plm.automation.siemens.com\/t5\/Student-Design-Contest\/con-p\/Student-Design-Contest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Student Design Competition<\/A>.
