Students develop industry skills using Siemens PLM Academic Software

Luleå University of Technology of Sweden is Scandinavia’s northernmost university of technology. With 15,000 students across four campuses it provides a wide range of international programs and has a strong focus on research and collaboration. 30 years ago the university first implemented Siemens PLM solutions and now they have a large portion of our protfolio including NX™ software, Teamcenter® software, the Simcenter™ portfolio of simulation and testing software and Jack human simulation software in the Tecnomatix® portfolio.


Their aims are to provide a practical engineering education using industry best practices so that their students are highly skilled when they join the workforce. They also want to grow the university as a research center.

The way they are doing this is by teaching engineering using the 500 seats of intgrated CAD/CAE/CAM capability of the NX academic bundle along with industry production machinery. Peter Jeppson (senior lecturer at Lulea University) says

“At the university we teach CAD software and engineering theory at the same time, not as separate subjects. We give students the opportunity to solve real-world problems and make better products by considering overall function, performance, production and lifecycle. We use computer-aided design and simulation for every aspect of a product.”

Students and educators make use of Learning Advantage, the online e-learning tool which is free and available to educational instititutions using Siemens PLM academic solutions . Jeppson comments “Learning Advantage invites students to explore the software then gives them challenges according to their own progress and development.”

The university does not just make of our CAD/CAE/CAM offering but also of our Simcenter products: LMS Imagine.Lab Amesim & LMS Virtual.Lab for use on automotive winter testing and windturbines. They also use Tecnomatix for line design simulation and plant simulation.

By integrating all these differnt solutions into their courses and curriculums, Luleå is exposing its students to leading industry standard solutions and equipping them with vital digital software skills for their future careers in technology and engineering.
